CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Carl Winston growled at the seemingly endless traffic as he inched along the main highway on Cape Cod. Choosing this spot on a Friday during tourist season probably wasn’t a great decision. But on the other hand, it’s not likely anyone will notice us. He was in the back seat of an autonomous vehicle, which meant the trip required no actual work from him, but nonetheless, he felt the passage of time keenly and annoyingly. Such things didn’t generally cause him undue stress, but for some reason, where his meeting with Cynthia was concerned, it mattered to him. Of course, she’s almost certainly caught in the same traffic. And I’ve still got twenty minutes before we’re supposed to meet.

He’d contacted the other Syndicate assassin using codes they had in common to set the time, date, and location for the chat. Given that the Boston criminal organizations would be one of the subjects of conversation, it hadn’t made sense to do it anywhere they might be seen by one of them. He’d slipped the surveillance Rosetta always had on him by visibly going into his apartment and then portaling away. They would probably grow suspicious after not seeing any movement for a while, but he wasn’t worried about what the Roses’ leader thought of him. That’s a bridge more or less burned to cinders. If he’s not already plotting to kill me, he’s an idiot. Which, to be fair, would fit the available evidence.

The vehicle pulled up at the Cranky Crab, and he climbed out, shielding his eyes from the sun with a raised hand. The place was exactly what he’d been led to expect by its online presence: beach-themed, painted a bright yellow, with a spacious exterior deck and, he discovered upon entering, a comfortably cool interior with overhead fans spinning madly and happy music playing loud enough to be heard above the packed room’s conversations. He stepped back outside to wait for his fellow assassin.

He knew it was her as soon as she came into view. Her motorcycle veered off the road in a cloud of dust to bypass the traffic and bumped to a halt in front of him. Social niceties? Not for this one. She put down the kickstand, climbed off, and removed the helmet. “Hi, C.”

“Hi to you, C.”

“Nice place you picked.” Her tone held contempt for the sheeple around them.

He shrugged. “If you were going to name the last spot in the world where you’d likely find the two of us, this is probably it.”

She laughed. “Fair enough, but if they don’t have a decent piña colada, I’m outta here.”

It only took five minutes for them to be seated, order appetizers, and have drinks in front of them, a testament to the efficiency of the servers weaving through the place in their overly colorful Hawaiian shirts. He’d gone with a summer beer, and she had gotten the stated frosty cocktail.

Cynthia sipped through a straw, and they made small talk while the server took their food orders.
